Who’s excited for the start of summer tomorrow - those long daylight hours, warmer evenings, school holidays, long awaited catch ups with friends & family, plenty of fresh air and an abundance of delicious food?!
When we hear the word Summer, our minds drift to dripping ice cream cones, sticky little fingers and smiles of delight as our kid’s try their best not to lose any of that tasty treat!
In our house, ice cream is a must in the freezer at all times throughout the year and especially during summer. Despite this, there is nothing quite like taking a walk or a ride and heading to a new shop to try the latest flavours or meet up with friends. The hardest part - choosing between a refreshing, cool sorbet or a smooth, creamy ice cream.
We’ve tried a lot of flavours across many different locations and Melbourne certainly has no shortage of ice cream shops, but these are a few of our favourites!
Billy Van Creamy in North Fitzroy currently has a flavour synonymous with Summer fruits - salted mango swirl. But their plain chocolate is always a winner too.
Luther’s scoops in Brunswick does a take on the “Peters boysenberry ripple” but they use sour cream with a fruity burst mixed in.
Piccolina Gelateria in Collingwood has 3 special flavours that change each week to include things like peanut butter cookies & cream or frosty fruit. They are currently running a range of Christmas specials with caramel gingerbread or egg nog. However, the lemon sorbet is the best on a stifling Melbourne day.
Pidapipó in Carlton folds delicious raspberry sauce through their fior di latte ice cream to create a raspberry swirl which is reminiscent of the topping on fresh pancakes. Their passionfruit sorbet is the right mix of tangy and sweet to cool you down when the sun is hot!
So slide a pair of our polarised sunnies on your kids, grab their bikes and make your way to one of these gelato bars!
