WINTER ESCAPES IN VICTORIA

WINTER ESCAPES IN VICTORIA

Now that the cold weather is well and truly upon us in Southern Australia, what new places can we explore to get some fresh air, relax, eat and take a break from our devices? Thankfully Victoria offers a numerous amount of activities to suit all tastes and preferences.

For the snow lovers

The alpine region transforms into a winter wonderland during the cooler months, providing excellent opportunities for snow sports as well as cozy retreats. Mount Buller has a range of slopes for all skill levels and the village offers snug lodges and vibrant après-ski activities. Falls Creek is known for its cross country skiing and the picturesque village is perfect for families. Mount Hotham features a more challenging terrain, with stunning alpine views and luxurious places to sleep.

For those wanting to relax

If you’re looking for relaxation and rejuvenation, then head to Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges. Hepburn Springs is the perfect setting for a spa retreat where you can enjoy the tranquility of its natural mineral springs or relax with a massage. This region is also known for gourmet food and wine and there are plenty of artisan products to collect at the various markets and boutique shops along the way. If you need a stroll after indulging in such treats, there are many beautiful gardens and local art galleries in which to wander.

Discover the Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road is long and winding but offers breathtaking coastal scenery and charming little towns to visit. The winter light adds a unique beauty to the natural wonders, such as the limestone stacks of the Twelve Apostles. Winter is also the prime time for whale watching along the coast, and two of the best spots are Warrnambool or Portland. There are many scenic trails to discover and you might even stumble across some waterfalls like the Erskine Falls in Lorne. The lush greenery and misty air make the experience seem magical.

Embrace the Melbourne culture

The vibrant and exciting capital of Victoria offers a diverse range of winter activities to beat the chill! The Queen Victoria Market runs a night market featuring lots of different international cuisines, live music and artisanal crafts to peruse and purchase. Melbourne’s famous laneways are filled with street art, quirky shops and cute cafés. The city’s coffee culture is perfect for warming up on a cold day. Melbourne hosts a number of winter festivals including the International Film Festival and the Writer’s Festival. Over 3 nights there is a Firelight festival at the Docklands, with food, fire sculptures and lighting installations.

Wildlife & nature in the Yarra Valley

About an hour’s drive from Melbourne is the Yarra Valley, home of beautiful landscapes, scenic wineries and lots of local fauna. It is also where you will find Healesville Sanctuary - a place to wander the pathways and get up close with Australian wildlife. Visiting the wineries, most with their fires roaring, you can enjoy wine tastings, as well as savouring the region’s cuisine in a cosy atmosphere. And if you’re keen to experience the serene beauty from a different perspective, an early morning hot air balloon ride, followed by a gourmet breakfast is the perfect way to start your day.

A Grampians adventure

The Grampians National Park offers rugged beauty and outdoor adventures. The crisp winter air and fewer crowds make for an enjoyable hike on the trails, such as the Pinnacle Walk and Mackenzie Falls. For the adrenaline seekers, the Grampians provide excellent rock climbing and abseiling opportunities. This is also a great place to learn about the rich Aboriginal heritage and spot native wildlife, like kangaroos and emus.

Victoria’s diverse landscapes and vibrant culture make it an ideal winter destination. Whether you’re carving up the slopes, soaking in the hot springs or exploring the coast, there’s something for everyone. So pack your winter woolies, sunglasses just in case, embrace the chilly weather and make some memories in this beautiful state!
